Cologne is Germanys oldest city, founded by the Romans in 39 BC, and of undoubted interest to all civilizations due to its strategic position on the basin of the River Rhine and a crossroads for many old commercial routes. Cologne is known in Germany for its cosmopolitan atmosphere and its fully fledged historical and cultural importance from when it was first established. Visitors to Cologne find a marvellous range of outstanding architecture from Roman towers to modern day works, the Gothic Cathedral in particular attracts countless tourists every year, it is after all the largest cathedral in the country. There is also a good selection of museums, from that of Applied Arts, to the Ludwig, and the Chocolate Museum. The most important event in the calender for the city is Carnaval, when the city bursts in to life, full of colour, music and fun for all ages and creeds. Typical restaurants, known as Brauereis, serve lovely food and drink, among which you can try the typical Kölsch, a light beer served in small glasses. The inhabitants of Cologne are welcoming and friendly, making this city an excellent choice for those who wish to learn German.
